Project Brief

The goal of this project is to raise awareness of the benefits of composting food waste, to educate about composting, to convert food waste into compost, and to use the compost to grow plants at home.

The project requirements are:

  1. The resulting prototype meets several key requirements:
    1. build a prototype with a budget of 100 €
    2. have a suitable compost quality,
    3. the composting process is a 4 to 6 week cycle
    4. the design is intuitive and consists out of sustainable materials
    5. a mobile app that monitors useful parameters
    6. this all with the goal to produce a high-quality fertilizer
  2. Comply with the following EU Directives:
    1. Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive (EMCD);
    2. Low Voltage Directive (LVD);
    3. Machinery Directive (MD);
    4. Radio Equipment Directive (RED);
    5. Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (ROHS);
  3. Mandatory adoption and use of the International System of Units (The NIST International Guide for the use of the International System of Units)
  4. Use open source software and technologies.
